Is the Dental Implant Procedure Painful?

your smiling dentistPatients considering dental implants may be interested in how the procedure and recovery will feel. Will it hurt? Your comfort is a primary concern at The Paddington Dental Surgery, and we will endeavour to make this experience as pleasant as possible. An advanced surgical technique, dental implants require the placement of titanium posts into the bone. This helps to achieve a smile that’s highly durable and natural-looking. To minimise discomfort, we will utilize innovative pain-reduction techniques, including local anaesthetic and sedation dentistry, as best suits the individual. As a result, most patients report little to no discomfort from the procedure. Additionally, prescription and over-the-counter medication can be used to manage any disagreeable sensations that may be felt during the healing process.

We’re just as concerned with the patient experience as you are. We encourage you to ask us any questions about this procedure to help you feel comfortable about your decision.

How Are Dental Implants Placed?

dentalimplantplacementA popular and effective way to address missing teeth, dental implants offer beauty, function, and durability. If you’ve selected this procedure to restore your smile, our experienced dentists will develop a customised treatment plan that precisely places the implants to optimise your outcome. The first step of this approach will be to create a detailed surgical guide—a map of where each implant will be situated based on your anatomic indicators. The oral surgeon will then create a small hole in each implant site and place a titanium post. Depending on your needs, one or more posts may be implanted. Your comfort and care are our highest priorities, and we offer sedation dentistry techniques if you feel any dental anxiety.

After placement, the bone and implant will be allowed to fuse (called osseointegration) over the course of three to six months. During this recovery process you will have a temporary crown in place. Once the bone has healed, a permanent crown will be attached that is colour-matched to your natural teeth to achieve the most natural-looking result possible. In addition to the exceptional aesthetic and long-lasting effect, another benefit is low maintenance. Simply brush and floss regularly as you would with your natural teeth.

Dental Implants: Are They Safe?

safe dental implantsYour smile is one of your most defining features, which is likely part of the reason you’re considering dental implants. At The Paddington Dental Surgery, we understand that safety is always a primary concern with any procedure, and our skilled dentists are dedicated to your wellbeing. Dental implants can be one of the most effective and aesthetically appealing ways to address missing teeth. They typically preserve bone structure, require no extra maintenance other than regular brushing and flossing, and they eliminate the need to file down healthy teeth. Additionally, dental implants can provide long-lasting results. Still, some individuals wonder if there could be complications. Dental implants require oral surgery, and there is some measure of risk involved in any surgical technique; however, selecting an experienced and qualified dental professional to perform the operation can reduce these concerns. Furthermore, our skilled oral surgeon will assess each patient for any signs that he or she may not make an ideal candidate prior to recommending this approach.

We want to help you achieve the smile of your dreams within the safest environment possible. We will take the time to answer your questions, walk you through the steps, and guide you to a decision that best suits your needs and goals.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

Are Dental Implants Right for MeAt our practice, our experienced dental team often utilises dental implants and implant-supported dentures or bridges to help patients restore their smiles. Dental implants can be used to replace one, several, or all missing teeth with beautiful, natural-looking results. Although effective for a wide range of people, this restorative procedure is not for everyone. However, if you are unsatisfied with the appearance or function of your mouth, we can help.

Generally speaking, patients should be non-smokers in good overall health to receive dental implants. Additionally, adequate bone structure will be necessary to support the implants. Even if you lack sufficient bone mass, you may still be able to have dental implants. In many cases, bone grafting can be performed to build the foundation you need for this treatment. If this applies to you, we will discuss your options during your initial consultation.

Sydney Dental Practice Emphasises Importance of Total Health Dentistry

Dr Duncan Copp and his team at The Paddington Dental Surgery explain how comprehensive dentistry should enhance the wellness of the mouth, body, and mind.

Sydney, AU — In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a bulletin stating the connection between oral health, general health, and quality of life. Dr Duncan Copp and his team at The Paddington Dental Surgery explain that their Sydney dental practice has been an advocate for Total Health Dentistry since its inception. The comprehensive approach to dental care, they explain, is designed to consider a patient’s overall wellbeing beyond their oral health.

Dr Copp explains that Total Health Dentistry means providing traditional dental care at the highest level while simultaneously addressing the influences that could lead to poor oral and body health. He says this can include identifying and treating sleep apnoea and TMJ disorder, or helping an individual find an oral hygiene routine that best suits his or her lifestyle. Additionally, Dr Copp suggests that a practice committed to patient wellbeing will be equipped with the latest digital technology (to reduce radiation exposure) and eco-friendly practices (to reduce waste).

The other side of the coin is patient comfort, Dr Copp continues. Holistic dental practices and luxurious amenities can help many individuals feel more at ease during treatment. The Sydney dentist says his team offers attentive, friendly care that can make visiting the dentist more pleasant, particularly for people who experience dental anxiety.

Dr Copp encourages patients to seek out a practice that considers the complete dental wellness needs of the individual. “Your mouth can make you sick, so for this reason The Paddington Dental Surgery takes a comprehensive approach to dental care, building a healthy body from the foundation of a healthy mouth.”

Can Teeth Bleaching Damage Gums?

shutterstock_80455696Bleaching can be a simple and effective way to improve the look of your smile. However, some patients fear that teeth whitening can be the cause of a variety of problems, including sensitivity and gum damage. While tooth sensitivity can be a common effect, gum damage is abnormal with professional treatments such as KöR® and Zoom!®. Irritation to the gums can occur in certain cases, though, and our experienced dentists explain how gum problems can develop, and what you can do to address them.

Most instances of gum irritation seem to occur with an ill-fitting mouth tray. At our practice, we create customised dental trays that precisely fit your smile for the most comfortable feel. Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products, on the other hand, utilise one-size-fits-all trays and strips that may rub the gums, or they may extend beyond the teeth and spread the bleach onto the sensitive gum tissue. If this happens to you, we recommend calling us for a custom-made aligner.

Our dentists will be happy to inform you about the bleaching agents used in our treatments and how our techniques can achieve a brilliant result. OTC products vary from brand to brand in composition; in fact, they may vary from box to box. If you’re allergic to an additive, or if the peroxide has degraded, you may have an unwanted reaction, including irritated gums.

Typically, the safest course of action is to undergo a professionally supervised bleaching treatment. In the unlikely event a concern develops, you have an experienced dentist ready to help. Most people will have no negative consequences as a result of teeth whitening. Being well informed about your options and choosing the best one for you can help increase your chances of having an incident-free procedure as well.

We perform teeth bleaching treatments every day, and each one is tailored to the needs and goals of the patient. If you would like to know more about the process, or if you would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us today.

How to Prepare Sensitive Teeth for Bleaching Treatment

shutterstock_111721961There are numerous benefits to having a beautiful, bright white smile. However, many people experience tooth sensitivity when they use bleaching products, either over-the-counter or in a professional setting. At The Paddington Dental Surgery, we offer the latest techniques in teeth whitening to help you achieve the smile you desire with less discomfort. Additionally, there are many ways you can prepare your teeth before and during treatment, as well as help reduce the risk of sensitivity after a procedure, all from the comfort of your home.

Before Bleaching

If you know you have sensitive teeth, try using toothpaste and mouthwash products specifically formulated to help minimise the risk of a painful reaction. You should also be brushing your teeth and gums in soft circles with a soft-bristled brush to avoid damage that could be irritated by whitening agents.

During Bleaching

Again, continue to use a soft brush for oral hygiene. If you’re using at-home whitening trays and you find that discomfort persists, you may want to try whitening every other day or asking one of our dentists for a lower peroxide level. Over-the-counter pain medication can also help manage short-term discomfort. Another option we may be able to provide is fluoride gel, which can be placed in the mouth trays to reduce the strength of the whitening solution.

After Bleaching

Avoid excessive use of bleaching treatments. We recommend always following your dentist’s instructions for use, including when to stop. Once you complete the process, sensitivity should subside quickly. In the event discomfort continues, contact us right away. You may have a cavity or another concern that is causing trouble.

How Long Does Teeth Bleaching Last?

shutterstock_149330147Professional teeth bleaching, such as KöR® and Zoom!®, can help your smile look its very best, but no whitener available has permanent results. So how long do the results of teeth whitening last? And what can you do to extend the benefits? Our skilled dentists explain what happens once you head back home or after the trays come out, and what you can do to maintain the smile you love.

Your diet plays a major role in how long your teeth will remain as bright and beautiful as when you finished whitening. A wide range of foods and beverages can stain teeth, including tea, coffee, soda, wine, juice, and other drinks, as well as berries, lemons, tomatoes, and other foods. A good rule of thumb is this: If it can stain your shirt, it can stain your teeth. If you can manage to limit or mostly avoid these treats, your teeth will remain white longer.

Another trick to extending the results of your teeth bleaching is to use whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes between touch-ups. These products help clear away minor stains and food particles for lasting radiance.

Your results will be unique to your teeth and your habits, but, in general, teeth bleaching can last around six months or more. That doesn’t mean you’ll need the same level of treatment at the six-month mark. You can perform occasional touch-ups to maintain the look you love for as long as you like. Our customised dental trays make maintenance easy. Of course, you can always wait a little longer and undergo a professional bleaching session again for more comprehensive results. Your smile goals are singular, and we can help you achieve them.

What’s the Difference Between Over-the-Counter Whiteners and Professional Teeth Bleaching Treatments?

teethwhiteAs a fast and easy way to enhance your appearance, teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available. For many people, the question comes down to approach. Are over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products or professional bleaching treatments better? There are many differences between the two techniques, and the right one for you will depend on a number of factors. Regardless of your goals, our experienced dentists at The Paddington Dental Surgery can help you achieve the bright smile you desire.

An essential difference between professional bleaching – including KöR® and Zoom!® – and OTC whitening is that the terms whitening and bleaching are not synonymous. A bleaching treatment must contain either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to be labelled as such. A whitening treatment can be any product that removes food or debris from the teeth. Some OTC teeth whiteners contain bleach and others don’t, so be sure and check the packaging.

Professional bleaching treatments, whether they are completed in office or offered as an at-home treatment, typically contain a stronger bleaching agent than OTC products. Hydrogen peroxide is also much stronger than carbamide peroxide. It’s also important to note that professional techniques come with the reassurance that a dentist is supervising your care.

The strips and mouth trays that come with OTC products are one-size-fits-all. That may be fine for some people, but many individuals consider the appliances uncomfortable. Custom-made trays from our dentists not only fit better, they may also reduce gum irritation as the whitening agent can more easily remain on the teeth and not spread to other areas of the mouth.

Generally speaking, the OTC products are less expensive than professional treatments, which is why so many people choose them. However, professional teeth bleaching can achieve much more comprehensive results, often in far less time, than OTC products.

There’s a lot of information about whitening products, and we’re here to help. If you have questions about teeth whitening, or if you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled dentists, please contact us today.
