What Types of Sedation Are Used at the Dentist?

Have you ever experienced fear or anxiety when scheduling a visit with the dentist or undergoing dental treatment? These feelings of discomfort are, unfortunately, quite common, and Dr Duncan Copp and our entire team are committed to helping you feel at ease whether you’re receiving a routine check-up or a more advanced procedure. In addition to our friendly, compassionate, and welcoming practice philosophy, we offer a comprehensive range of effective sedation dentistry options to further enhance your comfort and minimize anxiety. If you feel one of our sedation methods can help you feel greater calm, we will be happy to discuss utilizing them during your initial consultation.

There are two main categories of sedation methods: conscious and IV sedation. Conscious sedation covers several types of calming options, such as nitrous oxide gas, homeopathic herbal sedatives, and prescription oral medication. Nitrous oxide gas is one of the most popular forms of sedation, and this technique can be administered in small doses to enhance relaxation. Oral medication can be taken as a single pill prior to treatment. You will remain conscious and communicative during the procedure, but you may not remember the experience once the medicine wears off. We can also suggest herbal supplements to help you feel more comfortable, as well as provide soothing music, blankets, and entertainment.

IV sedation is available if you experience a high level of anxiety and prefer to remain asleep during your treatment. Our anaesthetist will administer the relaxing medication intravenously and remain present for the entirety of the event. Your comfort, safety, and results are our highest priorities.
